Annual Sedro-Woolley High School Blood Drive Sparks Selflessness in Students
Nearly 100 Sedro-Woolley High School students participated in the blood drive on Wednesday, April 18. The blood that students donated will save people who need blood transfusions for emergencies.
The students donated 79 pints of blood, one pint per student. Both Emanuel Martinez and Yesenia Martinez, two sophomores at SWHS, donated blood for the first time. They said that it was a little scary but very worth it.
“I am the first one to donate my blood in my family and i’m not really sure if my family supports me donating my blood,” stated Emanuel Martinez.
The atmosphere was nerve-wracking, yet fulfilling. “I was really nervous but overall it felt good to donate,” said Yesenia Martinez.
There were a lot of students in line to answer the questions on the ipads that were handed out. The questions asked about what kind of medicine the participants take and if they have been in any contact with someone else’s blood in the past month or so. They also asked about their sex life and if they or their partner has or had an STD. Everyone is required to answer these questions and the information is kept private.
After that, they waited until a nurse came to take them back to check their blood pressure, weight, temperature, and if they had eaten a good breakfast and drank a lot of water.
One of the planners, Jennifer Santos Morales said, “I love project planning and I really wanted to do this so I wanted to give it a shot because this is my first time and I think it was successful.”
