White Boy Rick
White Boy Rick tells the bittersweet story of a young teenage boy by the name of Rick Wershe Jr (Richie Merritt) that gets caught up in the sticky corruption of the law and crime in the ghettos of Detroit in the 1980s.
At only 15-years-old, Rick takes after his father (Matthew McConaughey) and immerses himself in the dangerous act of trading and selling guns on the street. Things start to go sideways when a couple of hostile FBI agents confront Rick on his father’s semi-legal business after a child is shot and killed with an AR 15 he had sold.
The movie takes place at the peak of the cocaine epidemic, when the police were desperate to crack down on the selling and possession of drugs.
Rick is thrown undercover and told to sell drugs to save his father from jail time. He follows their directions, making friends with the criminal underworld along the way…
This film finds a way to fit into almost every movie category. A little action, a little thriller, and a whole lot of comedy adds up to one seriously decent film. It has good acting and a solid plot, and not only that but it’s also based on a true story.
Even the casting directors did an immaculate job on this movie. The kid actor who played as Rick, Richie Merritt, was a first-time actor that was found in his high school principals office at the age of 15. They spent two weeks working closely with him before sending him off to complete the entire movie.
I would definitely recommend taking a couple hours out of your time if you want to watch a movie with an authentic storyline that will have you truly entertained.
