Finding a Fix for the Homeless Crisis
Homeless people can be found out on the streets walking around, or sleeping in cars, on benches, or setting up a tent in the grass in most communities. They stand on a corner and hold a sign asking for money or food, saying anything will help.
People often wonder if they are using this money for food and water or other things such as drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. People often wonder whether or not our government should help them.
“To fix the homeless problem, we’d need to get affordable housing, public transportation, mental health/substance abuse treatment options, medical coverage and have a good economy that’s offering jobs to all who wants to work. Eliminate any benefit from doing the wrong thing,” said Lin Tucker, Sedro-Woolley Police Department Chief.
If the government were to spend $20 billion in the United States to completely end homelessness, according to an article by Huffpost published within the last six years. The government can choose to either end the homeless situation this way, or they can continue to stabilize people through shelter, permanent housing, and assistance programs to keep them in housing and this would only reduce the number of homelessness in the U.S. but not solve it.
Freshman Shayna Bacus says that, “There should be more rehabs because most of them are on the streets because of drugs.”
The people could also start a petition to vote on this situation. It would help if the government were to be more involved to help the homeless in our community by putting in a shelter home or a rehabilitation in Sedro-Woolley. Spending $20 billion to end homelessness would be a good option but if the government doesn’t agree with that, here’s another option that the government can do.
The price of buying a house or renting one is increasing over the years, so it’s getting harder to find a place to live. This problem is affecting the amount of homeless people that we have in our state.
College student, Shalauna Ruiz says that, “Not being able to afford living conditions, food, a house to live, it’s expensive.”
The government could help the homelessness move into a house if they are putting in effort to better their life. This way there will be less homelessness out on the streets if the government is giving a helping hand to get them started.
Sedro-Woolley may not have a huge population of homelessness, but it all adds up in the end and to fix this situation completely. These options would make a difference.
The benefits of making these changes would save our government money because it would reduce costs and it’s less money to end it all at once. It would help with litter or trash, it might make other kids or people feel more comfortable on the streets, it strengthens the health and well-being in our community or state, and it improves people’s lives dramatically.
Ending the problem of homelessness in our state would help with making our world healthier, we would become a stronger community and state, it would make other states or countries think better of us, it would show that we care about other people’s well-being and safety. Overall, ending homelessness in our community and state would be beneficial to everyone.
