Indie Hit Game “Among Us” Takes Hold

Among Us is taking over the internet, and it’s addictive nature is taking over the lives of teens everywhere. Among Us is an online game that has been around since 2018, but has only recently become the hot new trend for teens across the globe.

Many of these teens heard about this game through one of the biggest social media platforms to ever exist, Tiktok.

“I heard about it on TikTok, and was immediately interested,” said Alyssa Mercer, a 10th grader at Sedro Woolley High School.

Kids all over the world use the app TikTok, so when something like Among Us gets started it doesn’t take long for it to reach all different kinds of people from all over the world and once it does it sticks for a long time. Until the next biggest trend begins.

While the game is enjoyed by many, the biggest fans are teenagers looking for anything fun to do during these hard times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“ I heard about this game on the internet, and was immediately interested.” Said Alyssa Mercer, a 10th grader at Sedro Woolley High School, when being asked if she started playing because of its trending reputation.

Among Us is being played all over the world, and due to variations in the gaming software, those that play are able to interact with other people that speak the same language. This has become a big deal because all it takes is one person to start a trend for it to catch on and go viral.

One of the biggest attractions of the game is the ability to connect online with friends during a global pandemic, when life has been turned upside down. One might even relate it to a perfect storm. This game has been trending since mid-July through current day November 2020, with no indication of slowing down.

An informal poll on social media asking Sedro-Woolley high school students if they play the game showed that 80% do play while 20% do not play.

Some people chose to not hop onto this trend and don’t find it fun, “ I don’t find Among Us very appealing because lately, I’ve been trying to keep my attention mostly directed towards school,”  said Bella Blankenship Miller, a 9th grade student at Sedro Woolley High School.

When being asked why she doesn’t play the game  she added, “Among Us is just another thing that could potentially distract me from class.”

Blankenship Miller was one of the 20% of people who voted that they don’t enjoy playing the game Among Us. Blankenship Miller says she isn’t interested in video games, in general, and tends to not to spend a lot of time on her phone. She likes to be productive and go outside, instead of sitting inside on an electronic device.

People have many different opinions on this game, but the majority of people I have talked to like the game, and think it is great. “Sometimes I play so much I lose track of time” said Abby Vlohovich, a 9th grader from Sedro Woolley High School.

Abby is one of the 80% of people that like to play Among Us, but with the game being made in 2018 how is it that some of us are just hearing about it now?

Among Us became a very popular trend mid-year 2020 due to its accessibility and has continued to blow up ever since then, gaining more and more members everyday.

“My friends and I  play this game in groups all the time to stay connected when we can’t actually see each other,” said Alyssa Mercer.

Staying connected during these times, while still managing to quarantine and social distance, is so important and teens have found a safe way to make a connection even if its through a video game.
