In the 21st century, at-home music production has become more easily accessible than ever, and senior at State Street High School, Kaelem Thompson, also known as “Wow Kt” has proven that anything is possible with some extra time, a love for music, and a few supportive friends.
“I’ve been making music since I was a little kid, and I wasn’t good at it until I was in 8th grade because I wanted to be cool,” said Thompson.
However, what started from simply “wanting to be cool” has become a genuine passion for Thompson, as his music has become a form of therapy.
“It’s like the only way I get to express myself,” said Thompson.
As he’s explored various genres of music, he’s evolved from more techno-centered music to more of an acoustic style. He describes his music as unorthodox, edgy, unpredictable and audible. His favorite song that he’s produced is “Addiction.”
“Genre wise, it started off being electronic, and now I kind of like the flaws in real music,” said Thompson.
Music may have started as a hobby for Thompson, yet now it’s become a serious career option for him as he makes connections with other musicians and finds opportunities to perform.
“I hope to become a successful musician someday, and be able to make a living off of it,” said Thompson.
Thompson’s work has gone beyond being a resource for himself, but it has inspired others to pursue music as well.
“I’ve gotten a lot of messages from people saying it’s inspired them to do sports or whatever dreams they have, and I’ve had a
lot of people who’ve wanted do to music but didn’t know anybody who did music, so I kind of help them out and get them started and it’s been a really good community building thing for me and its helped me make a lot of friends” said Thompson.
Thompson’s music is available on all streaming platforms, and he’s expected to release more music this summer after he graduates from high school.
