The Life of a Wrestler

Winter sports have finally started and the pressure is on for the Cubs. Wrestling is a very physically demanding sport, so the right diet and workouts are key in the life of a wrestler.

Wrestling is an important part of Sedro-Woolley; our program retained state champions every year from 2001-2010 with 16 state champions from 2004-2009.

“Stay with it,”says CJ Johnson, a wrestler at SWHS.. “It won’t be easy but it will always be worth it.” Johnson has been wrestling for four seasons and is dedicated.

Johnson’s diet during wrestling season consists of healthier foods.

“I have the smoothie at breakfast and the salad at lunch mostly,” Johnson said. Staying in your weight class is very important for wrestling.

“If you don’t make weight you can’t wrestle,” Johnson says. Staying in shape is also really important, as, like other sports, wrestling takes strength and endurance. You are practically arm wrestling but with your whole body.

“You need a lot of muscle, and to be strong, you fight for your life,” says Sammy Brown, a Volleyball player at SWHS. When asked for her view on wrestling, from the other side of the mat, Sammy says she thinks it takes a lot, but it doesn’t seem too hard.

“There are a lot of injuries that come with it. You have to attack people, and that seems a little nerve wracking” Sammy says. Like other sports you have to push yourself, stay in shape, eat right, and work hard. “It can be hard because you have to push yourself and you do a lot of conditioning,” says Johnson.

For Sammy, she doesn’t have to focus as hard on her everyday life for her sport. “I don’t have a diet. I eat whatever I want really, I don’t care,” Brown says. Unlike wrestling, you can eat whatever you want and be in whatever shape or size to play other sports. “It’s better to be in shape but you can really be any size,” Sammy says.

Strict diets, Hard conditioning, and high expectations are all a part of the life of a wrestler.

“There is nothing between you and the other person, it’s simply you against them,” said Johnson.
