The former woodshop teacher, Mike Stewart, at Sedro-Woolley High School recently published a book, “Upon my Honor,” about his former football coach Ed Simons.

“Writing a book can be a daunting task,”said Mike Stewart who taught since 1985 at SWHS.  “It can be hard because there is both external and self imposed pressure to do it well. The stories and details matter. This project took me about a year and a half to complete.”

With the encouragement of some of  Stewarts friends he started the process of making his book that included his memories of his late football coach Ed Simons. “The “book” would not have happened but for the encouragement of a few friends and colleagues.” Stewart said.

Some of Stewarts friends have read his book and have only great things to say about it.

“I thought it was very well written. It really was a great snapshot of the time period Mr. Stewart was a student at Sedro-Woolley,” Dave Williams, the Sedro-Woolley High Schools fine arts teacher said.
The book has a lot of really important lessons in it, but also mentions the importance of logging in our small community.

“A very important part in this book is the logging,” said WIlliams, “It’s almost like an instructional guide on what it’s like for those people here in the community logging is a very large part of this community.”  But really the book is about his hardworking and dedicated Coach Simons and the lessons he taught Stewart.

“Coach Simons often said, ‘You can end each day completely spent, knowing that you gave everything you had, or you can hold back not giving it your all,” said Stewart, “If you give all of yourself, there will never be a question about what you could have, should have or might have done someday down the road.”
