Decorations Light up the Path to Holiday Cheer

Look outside, on houses, businesses and on apartments buildings and you’ll see Christmas lights. Pine trees are being cut down and are being bought. Commercials for Christmas deals on cars and decorations are appearing. But wait… it’s November.

It’s November and people all over Sedro-Woolley are skipping over Thanksgiving and starting to celebrate Christmas early. “A lot of people enjoy them and it’s a lot of work to put them up,” says Dave Young, teacher here at SWHS, “so I wanna get them up early so I can have them up for as long as we can.”

Christmas lights, however, have not always been the ideal thing for a Christmas tree, People used to decorate Christmas trees with candles as a symbol that Christ was the light of their world.

According to History.com, it says, “Christmas is to honor the birth of Jesus Christ.”

Christmas started out as just a Christian holiday.

“Today, Christmas is a time for family and friends to get together and give each other gifts and eat food.” What started out as a celebration for Jesus is now a celebration for a folk-tale man who delivers gifts to children all over the globe. Christmas has always been celebrated on Dec. 25th, even though there is no mention of Dec. 25th in the Bible.

Not everyone goes all out for Christmas decorating, William Cornelius, algebra teacher at SWHS says, “I decorate probably like 5 percent.”

There are houses around Sedro-Woolley that only have one strand of lights hung up, or a business that has a tree with lights but that’s all.

New ways to put up lights are being thought of or invented. The StarTastic is a stand up light that you stick in your yard, turn on, and it shines “Christmas lights” on your home, but there’s no strings or plugins needed. People are also using command hanging strips instead of nails, thumbnails or tacks, etc.

Some people like to put up their Christmas lights early, some do it late; some people even put them up and keep them up all year long. Not so much as a Christmas decoration but as a decoration in general.

Christmas lights and decorations are fun to look at, so people put them up at the beginning of November or after Thanksgiving. Decorating for Christmas is hard work, but put them up! Happy Holidays.
