On what was a rainy and cold day outside, the seniors kicked off an exciting homecoming week with a 2-1 sweep of the juniors in the annual Buff Puff game. The seniors came out firing, making a statement with a commanding win in the first set. The juniors fought hard in the second set, but fell short. In the end, the two teams decided to play a third set for the fun of it, where the juniors would finally prevail, winning 26-24. While the juniors may have lost, they still found ways to be hopeful about it and look forward to the next year.
“You know, having a 6-foot-5-inch guy that jumps 30 inches in the air doesn’t mean anything when you got heart,” said Camden Howell, a junior at SWHS. “The juniors got heart.”
The game is the biggest part, yet Howell addresses a good point. There are the athletic abilities that factor into which team will win, but it all comes down to how much a person will enjoy it. It also involves people wanting to try new things, bringing in yet another reason Buff Puff is great.
“I think it gives a lot of people the ability to show their diverse skill sets that aren’t in their normal sport. And I think people like doing that a lot because it’s just something new.” said Sam
Schulberg, a senior
at SWHS.
That’s what makes it fun. These diversities, and different “skill sets”, create bonds that normally wouldn’t bethere.
“Everyone loves to play volleyball, it’s a sport that they don’t play very much.” said Ethan DeJong, another senior at SWHS.
It’s because of these reasons that this tradition has gone for years. Word spreads quickly, people get interested, and it is passed through families. Siblings will tell their brothers and sisters, and so on.
“I think as long as people are willing to go out, I don’t see it ever stopping,” said DeJong. “I think it’s very important. Like all the traditions and games that we play, and whether it’s the float or whatever, just getting kids out to do those activities”
“Us doing Buff Puff means that activities, which just makes the whole experience better for the school” said Howell, “Once you get to those older grades and everyone’s out there doing it, it’s just a lot more fun.”
