Something is in the air! Something…Strange. When students walked into the halls for lunch on September 9th they heard the faint sound of rock music playing from the cafeteria. The drab daily routine of lunch time was spiced up with the presence of rockstars. “I liked that they played a lot of good songs from the early 2000’s and late 90’s.” said Aden Gervais, a fan of the rising band Something Strange. On stage was SedroWoolley High School graduates Dane Stafford (drums), Quinn Krivanek (lead vocals/guitar/piano) and current senior, Zach Schmidt (Guitar/Bass). Not only did the band play during first and second lunch, but they also played that evening at the Woolley Market, where their true fans gathered to listen. And gather they did, the upper floor of the Woolley Market was crowded with fans both young and old; people who were friends and strangers. ”They’re all really aesthetically pleasing, everything about them is on point. They’re just so adorable, I can’t help it,” said one of their biggest fans, Brianna Werner. They played for hours, rotating turns with The Woodland Giants another band who was there to perform. Their energy was high and unwavering, as was their skill. All things that make for an enjoyable and successful show. The band got together two and a half years ago. They started out by practicing in the choir room during lunch. “I guess the official story is, him (Schmidt) and I were doing yard work in Anacortes and I stopped the mower and I’m like, ‘Let’s start a classic rock cover band’. He just looks at me and he’s like ‘Yes! That’s exactly what I want,’” Stafford said. Quinn joined the band soon after and thus Something Strange was born. We all know a good rock band needs a cool name, so that’s exactly what Stafford came up with. Their name came from a line in The Doors’ song ‘People are Strange when you’re a stranger’. The Doors, along with a few other artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin have been a big influence on their music, the band stated. If you missed out on their previous shows then you can find them at the Woolley Market every third Wednesday of the month for open mic night starting on October 21st. ‘Come together right now’ and support this great local band. “Rock is not dead.” -Dane Stafford.
